weight loss for Low-fat

Low-fat diets do not lead to greater weight loss in the long term compared to low-carbohydrate or Mediterranean diets of similar intensity, according to a new study.

Researchers in US did a systematic review and meta-analysis of all randomised trials comparing the effectiveness of lowfat diets to other diets, including no diet, at improving long-term weight loss (at least 1 year) in non-pregnant adults.

They took into account the intensity of the diets which ranged from just pamphlets or instructions at the beginning of the programme to intensive multi-component programmes including counselling sessions, meetings with dieticians, food diaries, and cooking lessons.

Analysis of 53 studies involving 68,128 adults showed no difference in the average weight loss between reduced-fat diets and higher-fat diets.

Male and female brains work the same

There is no such thing called a "male brain" and a "female brain", suggests new research that found no sex difference in the size of he hippocampus,

"Many people believe there is such a thing as a 'male brain' and a 'female brain,'" said lead researcher Lise Eliot, associate professor of neuroscience at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, Illinois, US.

"But when you look beyond the popularised studies -- at collections of all the data -- you often find that the differences are minimal," Eliot explained.

The team examined findings from 76 published papers, involving more than 6,000 healthy individuals.

"Sex differences in the brain are irresistible to those looking to explain stereotypic differences between men and women," Eliot said.

"They often make a big splash, in spite of being based on small samples. But as we explore multiple datasets and are able to coalesce very large samples of males and females, we find these differences often disappear or are trivial," Eliot pointed out.

Meta-analyses by other investigators have also disproved other purported sex differences in the brain, Eliot noted.

Meta-analysis is a statistical technique that allows researchers to combine the findings from many independent studies into a comprehensive review.

There is no difference in the size of the corpus callosum, white matter that allows the two sides of the brain to communicate, nor do men and women differ in the way their left and right hemispheres process language, according to the researchers.

Women at higher risk of having a stroke

The world stroke campaign has chosen to focus on this theme because a woman is considered more at risk of having a stroke, more likely to die from a stroke than a man, less likely to receive acute care and rehabilitation than a man, more likely to experience a severe decline in cognitive function and runs a higher risk of post-stroke depression and instutionalization according to WSO.

A stroke is a rapidly developing loss of brain function due to disruption of blood supply to the brain. When stroke strikes, a blood clot or rupture of blood vessels causes bleeding in the brain and prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching the brain. It can be ischemic (more common with 85% cases being of this kind) or haemorrhagic (due to trauma or carotid injuries).

Dr M Madhusudana Babu, specialist in neurology at the King George Hospital (KGH), said, "After menopause, the level of protective hormone oestrogen decreases and owing to a longer life span women are more at risk of developing stroke. Besides, during pregnancy, the chances of blood clotting are also high and they can develop cortical venous sinus thrombosis. Stress, antibody syndrome and protein C deficiency syndrome are other triggering factors for stroke or blood clotting in the veins and arteries."

"Primary prevention of stroke includes controlling hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, smoking, alcoholism and regular health check-ups after 50 years of age. While secondary prevention to check the second attack includes administration of anti-platelet drugs and certain drugs like statins to reduce cholesterol levels. Ischemic stroke can be treated through thrombolytic or clot bursting therapy and by giving TPA injections in the veins, while haemorrhagic stroke can be treated with medicines and surgery," added Dr Madhusudana Babu.

Meanwhile, on World Stroke Day, Care Hospitals in association with Andhra Pradesh Specialty

Hospitals Association (ASHA) organised a special awareness programme to educate people about the dangers of stroke. Speaking on the occasion, Dr G Kishore Babu, consultant neuro-physician at Care Hospitals said: "Aging, unhealthy diet, tobacco use, and physical inactivity fuel a growing epidemic of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and vascular cognitive impairment. Worldwide, stroke accounts for 5.7 million deaths each year and ranks second to ischemic heart disease as a cause of death and a leading cause of serious disability."
According to doctors, stroke is the third most common killer disease in India after cardiac ailments and cancer, but in around 80% of the cases, the patient can be saved from becoming crippled or death if treated within 4.5 hours of the onset of symptoms. In India, around 18 lakh people get afflicted with stroke every year. Andhra Pradesh is also on the forefront when it comes to the incidence of stroke with nearly 75,000 people getting afflicted with stroke.

Amit Mishra Arrested on Charges

Mishra was booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 354
(assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 328 (causing hurt with intent to commit an offence).

The complaint was registered during the last week of September when Mishra. The woman, who is reportedly a friend of the cricketer, alleged Mishra assaulted her in his hotel room with a kettle and even abused her.

Amit Mishra, a member of Team India's limited overs squad in the recently-concluded series against South Africa, was arrested by Bangalore police on Tuesday on charges of assaulting a woman friend during a national camp in the Garden City in September.

Mishra was charged with assaulting a woman friend in hotel room when Indian players had gathered in Bangalore for a preparatory camp ahead of the series against South Africa. Leg-spinner Mishra picked up four wickets in four matches. His best was a 2/47 in the first ODI in Kanpur that India lost.

"He was later granted bail as it's a bailable offence. We will have to gather more evidence now before we file the chargesheet against him."

Four Year-Old Girl Raped in Delhi, Injuries Horrifying

"She was brought to our hospital at around 8 pm Thursday night," said medical superintendent of Safdarjung hospital, A K Rai. The child has undergone an emergency surgery and is out of danger.

A four-year-old raped in Delhi has sustained injuries reminiscent of the December 16, 2012, rape case, doctors have said. With extensive damages in her intestines and private parts, apart from bruises and bites all over her body, she will need a series of surgeries over six months to completely recover, they said.

The accused has been identified - the child has named him but is yet to be traced, the police said.

The child - who is from a low income family  had been lured away from outside her house with chowmein and Rs. 10 on Thursday, her father had said.  Within an hour, she had crawled back, bleeding and in terrible pain.

"They wanted to kill her but heard some woman approaching so ran away, leaving her bleeding profusely on the tracks. She somehow managed to crawl back," he added.

The girl's father - a resident of northwest Delhi's Keshavpuram -- claims he had planned the assault. "He had taken her to a jungle nearby where another man was waiting and she was raped there. They had planned it that way," he said.

The chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, who visited the child at the hospital, also described her injuries as "horrific".

Rudhramadevi movie Review Story

Director          :   Gunasekhar
Music director: Ilayaraja
Producer        : Gunasekhar

 Anushka Shetty as Rudrama Devi.
Allu Arjun as Gona Ganna Reddy.
Rana Daggubati as Chalukya Veerabhadra.
Vikramjeet Virk as Mahadeva Nayakudu.
 Prakash Raj as Shiva Devaiah.
Krishnam Raju as Ganapati Devudu. Suman as Hari Hara Devudu. Adithya Menon as Murari Devudu.

"Rudhramadevi" featuring actress Anushka in the title role released today. The film has received positive reviews from the audiences around the world.Anushka has played the title role of Rudrama Devi and her performance is the main highlight of the film. Allu Arjun who played the role of Gona Ganna Reedy is the main USP of the film

The film has brilliant production elements that are on par with the Hollywood standards. Ajayan Vincent's cinematography, Ilaiyaraaja's soundtrack and background score, superb VFX works are another highlights.

My rating 9/10 PERFECT 3D, VFX, Cinematography n BGM! Congrats to the entire team Its #GonaGannaReddy all the way Truly powerful than #Rudhramadevi @alluarjun is predictably outstanding #megastar's voice-over is an asset Story of #Rudhramadevi is well-known so no need to talk about that Direction-Cinematography-VFX-BGM are so strong assisted by performances While watching I asked myself 'Am I watching a #Hollywood film?' #Rudhramadevi thrills you with stunning visuals in 3D I loved it most Don't miss #Rudhramadevi Watch it in 3D atleast once You will surely love it Congrats to the entire team and a big bow to @Gunasekhar1

Story:-

The story of the film is set in the ancient Kakatiya dynasty of Orugallu. The majestic kingdom is ruled by Raja Ganapati Devudu(Krishnam Raju) who does not have any male successors. As time passes by, Ganapathi Devudu’s wife gives birth to a baby girl Rudrama Devi(Anushka).
Fearing that his long time enemies from the Devagiri dynasty would attack him after knowing that he has no male successors, the king decides to announce Rudrama Devi as prince Rudra Devudu to his empire.
Rudrama Devi grows up like a warrior and keeps her identity under wraps. Twist in the tale arises when the entire Kakatiya dynasty comes to know that the young prince is actually a girl.
What will Rudra Devudu do now ? Will he declare himself as the royal Rudrama Devi and fight the enemies ? and where does Gona Ganna Reddy(Allu Arjun) and Chalukya (Rana) feature in all this set up. To know answers to all these questions, you need to watch the film on the big screen

Plus Points :-

One of the striking points is the scale of the film. The huge budget spent is clearly visible in the form of huge sets and VFX work. Allu Arjun is undoubtedly the major highlight of the film. Gunasekhar has designed his character supremely well and Bunny does an awesome job with his diction and rugged look. The way stylish star has infused a comedy touch into his character is remarkable.
Anushka looks regal as queen Rudrama Devi and does her job with a lot of dedication. She has worked very hard for the war sequences and looks extremely glamorous in the songs. Rana plays his part well and ably supports Anushka in her endeavors. Prakash Raj and Krishnam Raju suit their roles aptly. After a long gap, Suman gets an important role as a baddie and performs extremely well.
First half of the film is pretty decent and showcases the growth of Rudrama Devi as the prince. Certain visuals and the way Allu Arjun’s character has been introduced is superb. There are many grand visuals in the film which have been handled well with VFX work.

Minus Points:-

One of the major drawbacks is the drag in narration. After setting up the first half in a decent way, Gunsekhar let’s the film down with some mediocre direction. He takes a lot of time to establish Rudrama Devi as the queen and does not elevate her character much. There are way too many characters which come and go into the proceedings.
Also, the way certain characters have been introduced lacks the desired effect. Stars like Nithya Menen and Catherine Tresa have been completely wasted in their roles. Second half of the film has a lot of lags and takes for ever to reach the climax. Gunasekhar also fails to generate the necessary emotions from crucial characters.
Songs in the second half only delay the film’s proceedings. Screenplay is below par during the second part as many scenes take their own time to unveil.

Technical Aspects:-
Ilayaraja’s music score is below average but his background score is decent in certain parts. Dialogues are pretty good and especially those written for Allu Arjun are worth a mention. Camera work is top notch and showcases the royal visuals in a grand manner.
The palace sets, costumes and the various props used are designed nicely. Production values are top notch as the makers have spent lavishly in giving the film a grand look. Rudrama Devi has a mixed bag of visual effects. There are certain VFX scenes which have been executed well and at the same time the graphics used in some war episodes look silly.
Coming to the director Gunasekhar, he has put his heart and soul working for this film. Most of the first half he plays his cards right and sets up an interesting interval bang. But sadly, he makes things tedious during the second half and does not elevate the required scenes.

Ashok Vajpeyi too decides to return Sahitya Akademi award

Hindi poet and literary critic Ashok Vajpeyi has decided to return the Sahitya Akademi award as a mark of protest against the growing assault on freedom and the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the subject

"Our Prime Minister, who is so loquacious on all issues, is silent on a series of ghastly events where writers and rationalists are being killed for their views and a common man has been lynched for his alleged eating habits. Narendra Modi needs to assure the reflective and creative community of this country that the Constitution must be respected by all, including his party members and party sympathisers," Vajpeyi, the 74 year-old former Lalit Kala Akademi chairman, told TOI over phone on Wednesday.

After Hindi litterateur Uday Prakash and English writer Nayantara Sahgal, Vajpeyi is the third recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award to return it. He had received it for his poetry collection, Kahin Nahin Wahin, in 1994.

"For the past year-and-a-half, I have been writing about the rise of violence, intolerance and bigotry in our society in my Jansatta column, Kabhi Kabhaar (Occasionally). We have been witnessing a culture of exclusions and bans. I strongly feel those involved are against the spirit of Indian tradition and seeking to create a parochial and prejudiced view of the past," Vajpeyi said.

"Today, we are witnessing an assault on the right to freedom, expression and life. We have a culture minister who says that APJ Abdul Kalam was a nationalist 'despite being a Muslim'. Another Union minister says during a world Hindi conference in Bhopal that writers are not invited because they 'come, drink, read papers and go away'," he said.

In recent months, India has witnessed daylight murders of Kannada writer and Sahitya Akademi winner, M M Kalburgi, and rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare.

Vajpeyi said that the police investigation in these cases is tardy. "The authorities seem to have no will to catch the culprits. In this backdrop, a Muslim has been killed over rumours of beef-eating in Dadri," he said.

The poet also expressed surprised that the Sahitya Akademi, an autonomous body, has neither condemned the killings nor brought any pressure on the government by issuing a statement.

India’s last few Oscar entries were embarrassing Irrfan Khan

Announcement of India’s official entry to Oscars are often followed by debates over the better films missing it. Be it the Gujarati film The Good Road (2013) or Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Barfi (2012), their credibility is mostly questioned. This year, however, the nomination of Chaitanya Tamhane’s debut Court went undisputed. Now, Irrfan Khan has said that India’s last few entries sent to the Oscars were “embarrassing” and added that Court is better than them.

“Court is a good film. I don’t know about the other films. Unlike a few years back, the kind of films that were sent, they were embarrassing. This is better than them,” Irrfansaid. Irrfan’s Paan Singh Tomar and The Lunchbox were two films that were in the forefront of being chosen as India’s Oscar entry, but ultimately Barfi! and The Good Road were selected by a jury appointed by the Film Federation of India.

Irrfan, who has done his fair share of work in international entertainment world, feels there should be a body “which should be really concerned about choosing the right film and sending it to a platform which is very important”. “We can’t judge what it will do and how it will be perceived. There (at Oscars) they have big competition, so it depends on Court...with which films it is competing. Also, there’s the luck factor. We can only try to send the best (film) we have made,” he said.

Having starred in films like the Oscar-winning entertainers Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi, Irrfan surely has an idea of how the foreign market perceives Indian cinema. Asked if Hollywood is still looking for clichéd Indian films, which have song and dance sequences, Irrfan said: “They are not looking for anything from Bollywood. They have a perception of Bollywood films having songs and dance sequences in it. But if we do films like The Lunchbox, Court and Slumdog Millionaire, then the perception will change. Somewhere that perception is changing, but that’s very little bit. Like Talvar, it’s a film with no song and dance. It’s doing very well.”
