Thanjavur: Six students of Sastra University in Thanjavur were arrested on Saturday on charges of murdering a fellow student on the campus.
The body of B Vijay Kumar Reddy, a native of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, was found dead on March 12. The police said that the six accused, also hailing from Andhra Pradesh, had allegedly beaten Vijay Kumar to death following a quarrel over a college project.
The accused were identified as Vaibav Vijay (20) of Hyderabad, Nannoorani Chandrasekaran (20) and Ramprasad (20) of Kadappa, Soma Sandeep (20) and Jayachandra Reddy (20) of Nalakonda and Ravikiran (20) of Mahabubnagar in Andhra Pradesh. They were remanded and sent to the Tiruchi central prison on Saturday. The police said that Vijay Kumar Reddy, a third year BTech computer science student, had prepared a project as part of his academic requirement. "He was a brilliant student and his project was rated the best in the college. The accused had wanted the victim to add them as coauthors of the project but he rejected the demand," said a police official. Later, when Vijay Kumar sent his project for an online contest, the six again demanded that he add their names or not participate in the contest, the official said. "When he refused, they beat him up in a fit of rage," the official added.
After Vijay Kumar collapsed and died, the accused left the body near a hostel in the campus. The police picked up the six accused the next day and during interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime.
