Aurangabad: A man suspected of being an activist of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was killed while two of his accomplices were arrested in a gunbattle with the Aurangabad anti-terrorism squad (ATS) here on Monday afternoon.
The slain suspect has been identified as Khalil Akhil Khilji (20), while the arrested are Abrar Babukhan alias Munna (36) and Mohammad Shaker Hussain (20), who was shot in both legs and is in a hospital.
ATS head constable Shaikh Arif, who suffered a bullet injury during the gunfight has also been hospitalised.
All the suspects are from Madhya Pradesh. Babukhan, a resident of Indore, is said to be involved in the 2008 Ahmedabad blasts and is wanted by the MP police for killing Khandva ATS constable Sitaram Tiwari and a lawyer who had tried to help the constable, in 2011.
SP (ATS) Navin Reddy said the suspects had sensed that the police were on their trail. “We asked them to surrender but they started fleeing the scene. While escaping, they started shooting indiscriminately at the ATS team,” he said while refusing to divulge further details.
Later, addressing a news conference, commissioner of police Sanjay Kumar, DIG Sanjay Latkar of the ATS and Navin Reddy said, “One suspect managed to escape but we will arrest him shortly.”
Reddy led one team, while the others were led by assistant police inspector Shiva Thakre and other officials.
