Indian scientists decode "Tulsi"plant genome

Indian scientists have deciphered the entire genetic make-up of Tulsi, a herb widely used for therapeutic purposes. The genome map will help in making new medicines using the plant.
A multi-institutional team led by Sowdhamini Ramanathan from the National Centre of Biological Science, Bengaluru revisited the age-old knowledge of the plant and its medicinal effects in their laboratories.
The plant synthesises a wide range of bioactive compounds, known for their anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-pyretic and anti-cancer properties.
These compounds are metabolites, compounds that are a by-product of plant metabolism, typically used for plant self-defence. These metabolites are very poorly understood because of lack of genomic information.
Sowdhamini and team have produced the first draft genome of O. tenuiflorum Krishna subtype, which is an important step in understanding and identifying the genes responsible for production of metabolites with medicinal properties.
“The sequence reveals the interesting pathways used by Tulsi to make ursolic acid, a medically important compound. If one could now use modern synthetic biology techniques to synthesise ursolic acid, it would be of great benefit,” said S. Ramaswamy, one of the researchers.

“This is the first report of draft genome sequencing of a plant species from NCBS and we hope to do more,” added Sowdhamini.

RBI cancels Sahara India Financial Corporation's NBFC registration

The Reserve Bank of India on Monday cancelled the certificate of registration of Sahara India Financial Corporation, a non-banking finance company, with effect from September 3.

With this mandate, the Lucknow-headquartered Sahara India Financial Corporation cannot conduct the business of a non-banking financial institution, the central bank said in a release.

The move came in wake of several alleged irregularities and violation of financial rules and regulations by Sahara.

Bullet-ridden bodie’s of Three youth found in Kashmir & Jammu

Bullet-ridden bodies of three youth were recovered on Monday from an apple orchard in Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said, claiming they were victims of rivalry between Hizbul Mujahideen and its breakaway group Lashkar-e-Islami.

"One of the slain youth has been identified as Amir Muhammad Reshi of Harde Shiva (Sopore) who had been missing for some time and is believed to have joined the breakaway group of the Hizbul Mujahideen headed by Qayoom Najar," a police officer said.

The bodies of the young men, aged between 17 and 21, were found in Shuru (Dangerpora) village in the district.

"Investigations have been launched in the murder and more facts will be shared with the media as these are unearthed during the course of investigations."

As police took custody of the bodies and shifted them for post-mortem and other legal formalities to the district hospital in Baramula town, agitated civilians blocked the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway at Pattan town and Kreeri.

Clashes also erupted between the protesters and the security forces in Sopore and Baramulla towns.

The protesters demanded that those responsible for the murder be brought to justice.

The ruling PDP condemned the killing and asked its rivals the National Conference not to play politics on the sensitive issue.

Lashkar-e-Islami headed by Qayoom Najar had hit the headlines in April-May when they targeted cellphone services in north Kashmir. Three service providers and land owners of cellphone towers were killed in those attacks.

The group also carried out grenade attacks in Sopore, Pattan and Srinagar to instil fear among cell phone operators and those associated with the trade.

Meat No sale in Mira-Bhayander on September 17

Ban on slaughter and sale of meat in the Mira-Bhayander region will be in force on September 17.

The state government has banned meat slaughter and sale on two days. The first day was on September 10 when all meat shops remained shut. Butchers in Mira-Bhayander say that they will follow the two-day ban as per the government resolution every year during Paryushan.
The Bombay high court has lifted the ban on meat sale in Mumbai on September 17. The ban will remain in rest of Maharashtra.

There was an uproar in the region when the BJP ruled Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) on September 4 imposed an eight-day ban on meat sale. The ban was reduced to two days by the municipal commissioner Achyut Hange.
