Narsapuram (West Godavari): A staff nurse at the government hospital here was suspended on Tuesday for turning away a pregnant woman. The woman gave birth to twins in front of the hospital at Rustumbada on Monday night, but one of the babies died soon after.
After a preliminary enquiry, the district collector placed the nurse under suspension for her negligence. “We will take action against the erring staff once we receive a full report on the incident,” a senior official said.
The nurse sent away Murala Venkata Lakshmi (24) saying there was no lady doctor present in the hospital at the time. Tragedy struck Lakshmi when the baby boy, whom she gave birth to in a cyclerickshaw fell on the road and died immediately. Another twin, a baby girl, was admitted to the government hospital later. The infant is struggling for life. Lakshmi’s condition is also critical.
Angry locals shouted slogans against the hospital staff for refusing treatment to the woman. Sources said the medical personnel refused to admit the woman as she wasn’t in a position to pay the bribe they had demanded. The personnel allegedly demanded Lakshmi to shell out Rs 300. “We had only Rs 100 and we promised to pay the remaining amount on Tuesday. But, the medical personnel turned us away and recommended us to approach a private hospital under the pretext that there was no doctor,” Lakshmi’s father Venkateswara Rao said. Activists of TDP, CPI, CPM staged dharna and demanded action against the medical staff
