It seems to be game, set and match for the Shahi Imam of Delhi Jama Masjid, Maulana Ahmed Bukhari. Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav has conceded all his demands and has also assured him to give “adequate representation to Muslims in political and administrative positions in the State”.This announcement can be termed as curtains to the ongoing verbal duel between the Maulana and Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Azam Khan. The truce came after a 40-minute meeting between Bukhari and Mulayam on Thursday. CM Akhilesh Yadav was also present. Mulayam agreed to give two seats of the Legislative Council to Muslims and also assured more Rajya Sabha seats to members of the community. He also assured the Maulana that he would give adequate representation to Muslim officers in districts and said more minority community members would be accommodated in the expansion of the Ministry. Akhilesh told mediapersons that Umar Ali Khan would file his nomination for a Council seat on Friday. Bukhari said Mulayam had said he would look into all the issues raised by him. “The community which voted SP to power should get its due. There should be at least five Cabinet Ministers from the Muslim community. Besides, adequate number of district magistrates and district police chiefs should be appointed,’’ he said. Bukhari, however, refused to comment on Azam Khan, who had not only opposed Maulana’s demand but had publicly stated that he should limit himself to religious matters.
