Washington: Originally hailing from the restive Russian province of Chechnya, two brothers – the elder of who was killed in a gunfight with police – are alleged to have planted the pressure cooker bombs at the Boston Marathon finish line that killed three people on Monday.
A manhunt is on for the other suspect amid a total lockdown of Boston, a city of more than a million people. The bloody finale, which also claimed the life of a policeman in the shootout, is still unfolding on the streets of Boston at the time of writing. It came after an Indian-American family was put through hell for several hours when their missing son was mistakenly named as a suspect.
No clear motive has emerged yet as to why the Chechen brothers targeted the Boston marathon. The elder, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, is reported to have posted videos with extremist religious views associated with al Qaida on You Tube. The younger of the two, Dzhokhar Tsarneav, possibly under the influence of his older brother, has also posted links to websites calling for Chechen independence.
But these findings, still unconfirmed given the dodgy nature of Internet content, did not square with what many of their family, friends, and associates were saying. The brothers were not recent arrivals to the United States as some reports initially said but instead came to the country legally via Kirghizstan nearly a decade back. Tale of Chechen bros who lost their way Web Hints At Boston Suspects’ Jihadi Tilt

The brothers were not recent arrivals to the US as some reports initially said but instead came to the country legally via Kirghizstan nearly a decade back. They enrolled in good schools, and at least the younger sibling was wellliked and had a good academic record, including winning a $2,500 scholarship from the city of Cambridge. In fact, he was listed as a senior at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, a highly regarded school whose alumni include actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
An uncle to the boys who lives in Maryand told the local media that the elder of the brothers was a loser who had dropped out of school and had come under the influence of radical Islam. “The last time in 2009…when I spoke with Tamerlan, I was asking what he was doing and he started telling me that he’s been in Islam. I told him, listen. Islam (has) always been there. You just do your business. Work. Go to school. Be useful. Know why you came to America,” the uncle Ruslan Tsarni, said.
The portrait that was emerging was of two young men who lost their way in America and came under the influence of radical Islam, with the elder one influencing the younger boy. A magazine published by Boston University which interviewed Tamerlan quoted him as saying although he had lived in US for five years, “I don’t have a single American friend. I don’t understand them.”
My son is a true angel, says father
In an anguished interview, the father of the suspects in the Boston bombing described his fugitive son as a smart and accomplished “angel”. Anzor Tsarnaev spoke by telephone from the southern Russian republic of Dagestan. “My son is a true angel,” he said. He said his son was “an intelligent boy” who was studying medicine. “They were set up, they were set up!” he exclaimed. “I saw it on television; they killed my older son Tamerlan.” AP
