Security for women in pubs is here to stay

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad:In thewakeof the Delhi gang rape that led to the tragicdeathof 23-year-oldNibhaya last week, city pubs have now beefed up their security measures to ensure the safety of female revellers walking in through their doors. Extra bouncers and staff have been appointed to pay special attention to women guests and keep ‘trouble-makers’ away from the pubs’ premises.
While these precautionary measures, which came into force from December 31, were
initially considered to be temporary arrangements which would be withdrawn post the NewYear bashes, pub managements maintain thatthese new norms are here to stay. “We have continued with our strict vigil andwilldosoin thefuture too. We have hired five more bouncers (a total of 10 now) to man the pub, especially on ‘ladies nights’ when we have large female gatherings,” said Vijay Mandal, manager of ‘Rain’ in Banjara Hills. Mandal informed that entry into the pub has been restricted only to couples now. “Stag entries will notbe allowed at any cost,” he added.
Other pubs were also seen taking similar measures with some even going one step further to arrange for transportation for single ladies partying
at their club. “It was only last week when we had a lady guest who needed transportation late in the night. We arranged for a cab to drop her home safely,” said Ronald Anthony, manager at ‘Cuba Libre’,where valet staff have now being roped in to double up as drivers for women leaving the premises at late hours. The bouncer strength here has also been enhanced and issued special instructions to keep a close watch on female revellers.
If that’s not all, the management of ‘Underdeck’ atTaj Banjara has
brought on board a lady official and stationed her near the women’s washroom only to ensure that ladies feel safe while walking in and out of it.
Filtering the crowd is another step thatisbeing focused on. “We try to ensure that no trouble-makers manage to get into the club with the help of their friends,” said Rajesh Chopra, general manager at BJN Group, speaking about ‘Firangi Paani’. He stated that ID proofswerebeing thoroughly checked and additional security guards have been employed, with two bouncers stationed on the dance floor, one at the entrance and one on the rounds. He also added that any unknown men seen making women uncomfortable were being asked to leave immediately.
