Thiruvananthapuram: A sessions court on Wednesday sentenced 24 CPM activists to life imprisonment finding them guilty of the murder of a man and woman returning from the funeral of an RSS worker killed in political violence, nine years back in 2002.
The Thalassery principal sessions court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on each of the convict.
An amount of Rs 75,000 thus raised would be paid to the family of the 70-year-old woman Ammu Amma, while jeep driver Shihab’s family would get Rs 1,50,000 as ordered by the sessions court on Wednesday.
The incident dates back to May 23, 2002, when Ammu Amma and Shihab (22) were returning from the funeral of RSS activist Uthaman, a bus driver, from Irutti.
On their way back home a group of CPM men confronted them with sharp weapons.
As Shihab, who was the driver of the jeep in which Ammu Amma was travelling, tried to escape, the assailants threw a bomb that killed the two. Four others in the vehicle were injured in the attack.
