Nizamabad: Five forest department employees were injured when they were attacked by smugglers in Nizamabad district on Thursday afternoon. The incident comes close on the heels of a forest beat officer’s murder by teakwood smugglers in Adilabad district.
On coming to know about illegal transportation of teakwood, Kamareddy deputy forest range officer Chandrakantha Reddy along with his staff rushed to Kannapur thanda in Sadasivnagar mandal in a jeep. They found five intruders transporting the precious wood in five bullockcarts from Pakala forest area to Kannapur thanda.
The intruders were asked to show the relevant papers for transportation of the teakwood. When they failed to do so, the forest employees warned the smugglers to hand over the wood and surrender themselves. However, the smugglers beat up the forest staff and fled from the spot.
Roop Singh, Venkat, Shankar, Mallikarjun and Raju received injuries in the attack. They were shifted to Kamareddy government hospital. Police registered a case and launched a manhunt for the smugglers.
