Lucknow: Mafia-turned-Bahujan Samaj Party MP Dhananjay Singh was arrested on Sunday in connection with a double murder case that took place in his constituency Jaunpur in 2010.
A joint team of Lucknow and Jaunpur police arrested Dhananjay from flat No 802, Bahukhandi Niwas, allotted to his father Rajdeo
Singh, a BSP MLA, in Lucknow.
Soon after his arrest, the MP was handed over to the Jaunpur police which took him to the district.
The relationship between the MP and BSP soured after his name was cropped up in the murders of two CMOs in Lucknow and the NRHM scam in the state. His father was denied assembly ticket by the party. BSP then suspended Dhananjay on September 24 for anti-party activities and his “audacity” to see Amar Singh at AIIMS without taking the party’s permission.
His suspension was revoked in November after he reportedly apologized.
On Sunday evening, a large police team led by SP (east) Vijay Bhushan along with Jaunpur cops led by DySP Ranvijay reached Bahukhandi Niwas at 4.30pm and arrested Dhananjay.
The police then brought him to Hazratganj police station and subsequently handed over to the Jaunpur police. Lucknow DIG DK Thakur confirmed that Jaunpur police had sought their help in arresting the MP. A contractor, Sanjay Nishad of Belav-Navghat village under Kerakat police station of Jaunpur, and atea stallowner, Nandlal Nishad, were killed when three motorcycle-borne miscreants opened indiscriminate fire at them on April 1, 2010.
According to reports, the contractof tolltax collection for a local pontoon bridge was allotted to Sanjay. He was standing at the toll tax post when three youth on a motorcycle reached there and opened fire on him. Nandlal, who was sitting at his tea kiosk, also sustained bullet injuries in the incident. Sanjay died on the spot while Nandlal died on the way to hospital.
