Warangal: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is embroiled in a fresh controversy. The alarming rise in consumption of drugs like brown sugar, heroin and ganja among students has created a stir on the NIT campus. The NIT was in news a few months back for incidents of ragging and a couple of student suicides.
While Special Branch and police are keeping an eye on those allegedly supplying drugs to the gullible students, NIT director Srinivasa Rao has constituted an enquiry committee to look into the issue. The move comes in the wake of a third year B-Tech student’s getting caught red-handed in the classroom with a huge consignment of ganja a couple of days back.
Joe Prasen, the student, who was taken into custody, spilled the beans and two ganja traders were picked up by cops. After it emerged that there is rampant drug abuse on campus, registrarAnandaraju lodged a complaint with Kazipet police station.
Srinivasa Rao said there would be strict vigilance to check drug abuse on the campus. He suspects the hand of ‘outside elements’ behind this menace. He said a committee comprising senior officials had been directed to probe the matter and submit a report.
The NIT director said that based on the enquiry committee report, strong action would be taken against the culprits.
