Dhanbad: In late night violence on Sunday, Maoists destroyed the railway tracks near Matari station between Dhanbad and Gomoh by planting land mines, causing major disruption in railway traffic. The Maoists announced two-day Bharat bandh in protest against the killing of their leader Koteshwar Rao, alias, Kishenji in West Bengal last week.
More than 30 trains were affected by the blast and several long distance trains were stopped at different places on Howrah-Delhi route. Divisional railway manager, Sudhir Kumar, visited the spot this morning and supervised restoration work.
According to Eastern Central Railways officials, overhead signaling wires were also destroyed by the Maoists. The rebels have targeted communication networks in the past as well.
Services on Howrah-Delhi route were suspended with some trains stranded between Gaya and Dhanbad. Hundreds of passengers were seen on platform of these stations, said railway sources. “Ganga-Damodar Express, Jodhpur-Howrah Express and Howrah-Kalma Mail were delayed by several hours due to destruction of tracks,” said Ved Prakash, divisional operations manager of EC Railways.
Since the area is considered a stronghold of Maoists, railway engineers could reach the damaged site between Matari and Nichitpur stations on Monday morning with RPF jawans. Maoists had earlier damaged railway tracks at two places between Dumir Vihar and Gomiya and Hehegada in Dhanbad division on Sunday morning .They also burnt some trucks on the G T road.
