Bhubaneswar/Koraput: Suspected Maoists shot dead a 39-year-old wheelchair-bound Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislator and his personal security officer at a public meeting in Orissa’s Nabarangpur district on Saturday, marking a new high for Naxal brutality.
Police said Jagabandhu Majhi was killed while he was distributing land pattas (record of rights) to poor people at Gona village, close to the Orissa-Chhattisgarh border, around 500km from Bhubaneswar. They identified his security officer as P K Patro.
DIG (south-western range) Saumeyendra Priyadarsi said manner in which the ruling party legislator was killed indicated Maoist involvement.
DGP Manmohan Praharaj told STOI that police were looking into all possibilities, including the personal enmity. SP (Nabarangpur) Niti Sekhar said three assailants on a motorcycle shot dead the two.
The assailants first shot the PSO from behind and then fired at the MLA in presence of around 300 villagers. Both of them had two bullet wounds each and died at the spot, an eyewitness said.
