New Delhi: Hours after being attacked by a self-confessed member of Sri Ram Sena, Supreme Court lawyer and prominent member of the Anna Hazare camp, Prashant Bhushan, demanded that the government ban the organization and called for a social boycott. The attack was immediately condemned by the government, with home minister P Chidambaram vowing to take strict action against the attackers
Discharged from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and addressing the media at his Noida residence, a bruised Bhushan said he was attacked by a member of Sri Ram Sena in their “trademark’’ fashion. His comments come after activists, including Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi, Medha Patkar and Aruna Roy, rallied around Bhushan in solidarity. Describing the attack, Bhushan said he had returned to his chamber from court when three young men barged in and kicked and punched him. “They kept shouting Kashmir, Kashmir… They did not bother to ask me anything,’’ he said.
The lawyer added that this was trademark Sri Ram Sena style which was reminiscent of Hitler’s Germany where troops beat up people who were against the regime. “Their intention is to scare unarmed, innocent people… not kill them,’’ he said. Condemning the “goondaism’’, Bhushan said the organization had no moral right to survive and should be socially boycotted. “The governments should ban such an organization,’’ he said.
Bhushan said the same organization had earlier attacked girls and boys in a Bangalore pub some time back.
Strongly condemning the attack, Anna Hazare said no one had the right to take the law in their hands. "I strongly condemn the incident. Nobody has the right to take law in their hands," he told reporters at Ralegaon Siddhi village. Hazare said he would speak to Bhushan and find out the reason behind the attack. "He (Bhushan) is our team member. I will ask him about the reason behind the incident. After getting the details, we will decide what to do," Hazare said.
