Mamata turns anti-Maoist-ToI-27.9.11

This Is A Deviation From Her Stance Before Becoming CM

Singur: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday sent out a stern warning to Maoists saying they can’t remain janus-faced and continue their killing spree while complaining about the state’s human rights violations and police excesses.
“The initiative for talks can’t go together with killings. You (Maoist) have to decide the future course. Who has given you the right to kill? Those who complain against police excesses as violation of human rights should clarify whether their ghastly killings conform to human rights,” said Banerjee, whose rise to power started with the campaign against the land acquisition in Singur, a cause Naxals also backed. Her warning on Monday that she wouldn’t tolerate any Naxal killings came at a public meeting in Singur.
This was a deviation from Mamata’s stance before she came to power in Bengal. As an Opposition party in the state, Trinamool Congress had maintained Maoists did not exist in Bengal and that it was a bogey created by the CPM.
In August last year, Maoists had supported Mamata’s Lalgarh rally where she shared the dais with Medha Patkar and Swami Agnivesh. Maoist central committee member Kishanji had then said, “The Maoists will extend full support to the rally (on August 9 at Lalgarh in West Midnapore district). The people of Jangalmahal will protect all those who join the rally.”
But on Monday she called the Maoists cowards, echoing then CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee remarks in 2008 when he had said, “Maoists hide in forests and hills in Jharkhand. They kill police personnel, our party men in Bengal and go back to the jungles.” “Those who are cowards kill people from behind. They do not have the guts to face the people who want jobs, schools, colleges hospitals in the area. We have taken up plans for the entire area with 10,000 jobs in police for the youth. We are also setting up a police training centre for them before they join service. The youth are getting ready in the villages to take the plan forward,” she said. Mamata also called Maoists “CPM’s accomplice” as both were against her Ma-Mati-Manush credo, she said. Bhattacharjee had mocked this often during election campaign.
Maoists trying to kill me: Didi M amata Banerjee claimed in a television interview that Maoists were trying to kill her. Trinamool leader and Union minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy and she were living under Maoist threat, she claimed while reacting to twin murders in Jangalmahal on Sunday. “I will give the last drop of my blood to fight Maoism. I am not scared of death. I will ensure peace returns to Jangalmahal,” Mamata said, adding, “I have tried to open up the path of peace and dialogue, but the Maoists are not willing to walk that path. Though I don’t interfere in daily functioning of the police, I can tell you the police cannot sit quietly and watch the blood spilled by the Maoists in Jangalmahal everyday,” she said, adding Maoists were using social networking sites like FB and Twitter to connect with the people.
