Hyderabad: Rampant land disputes and settlements in the Old City had a chilling fallout on Saturday morning when MIM MLA from Chandrayangutta and party floor leader in the assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi sustained serious injuries in a clash between his followers and rival group at Barkas while one of the opponents was shot dead.
With deep cut injuries on the hands and at least three bullet injuries on the abdomen, Akbaruddin was rushed to the nearby Owaisi Hospital where he was later declared out of danger.
    The incident triggered tension
in the Old City with MIM supporters converging in hundreds at the hospital and the authorities deploying police personnel at vantage points and imposing section 144 even as shopkeepers downed shutters. The tension eased by the evening after it became clear that Akbaruddin was out of danger, but with the MIM having called for a bandh in the Old City on Sunday, the police continue to be on a high alert.
The incident happened around 11.20 am, when Akbaruddin, who had embarked on a padayatra in the area at 9 am, went to Peeli Dargah near the MIM party office at Barkas and said that a wall would be raised around the graveyard. He was accompanied by about 60-70 persons including MIM Malakpet MLA Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala and party Barkas corporator Mansoor bin Mohammed Awalgi.
According to eyewitnesses, Akbaruddin picked up an argument with Younus bin Omar Yafai, resident of the house next to the dargah, and reportedly threatened that he would get them evicted from their premises. All of a sudden, about 10 people led by local leader and Younus’ brother Mohammed Pahelwan came there on two-wheelers carrying swords, knives and firearms and a clash ensued between the two groups. While Akbaruddin sustained serious injuries, Mohammed Jani, the personal security officer of Malakpet MLA Balala, opened fire with his revolver and shot at the attackers.
Ibrahim, 22, and son of Younus, died of bullet injuries while two of his brothers, Awad, 30, and Abdullah, 35, sustained injuries and are being treated at the hospital. Of the two, Awad is said to be in a critical condition. Previous enmity led to clash
Hyderabad: The clash between MIM workers and their rival group at Barkas on Saturday was triggered by previous enmity and land dispute between MIM MLA Akbaruddin and local 'rowdy-sheeter' Mohammed Pahelwan.
"Ever since the Rachchabanda programme in January this year, Akbaruddin has been after the government land at Bandlaguda, Balapur, Shaheen Nagar, Balapur graveyard which was encroached upon and sold away by Pahelwan.
Following Akbar's persistence, the district collector had ordered that all constructions on the said land should be demolished," said the sources.
Even as chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and several other leaders called on Akbaruddin at Owaisi Hospital and his elder brother, Hyderabad MP and MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi rushed to the city from New Delhi, Mohammed Pahelwan told the media at Yashoda Hospital that Akbaruddin was to blame for the clash. "This morning, he came to my brother Younus' house and threatened him. It was only natural that the sons went to defend him. Akbar has been harassing us since 2009. I was made a rowdysheeter and criminal cases were booked against me," he said."A murder case should be booked against Akbaruddin because he is responsible for the death of my nephew," Pahalwan said.
Meanwhile, city police commissioner A K Khan told STOI that the main accused Pahelwan and five of his associates were taken into custody late in the night and cases were registered against them under Sections 147, 148, 149 and 307 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons, unlawful assembly and attempt to murder.
