Faizabad: A local court on Tuesday sentenced a former minister and BSP MLA Anand Sen and his two aides to life imprisonment for kidnapping and killing a Dalit girl in October 2007. He was alleged to have an affair with the 24-yearold law student.
Anand Sen is the second BSP MLA to have been awarded a life sentence. On May 6, a court in Auraiya awarded life to Shekhar Tiwari for killing PWD engineer Manoj Gupta, who resisted a BSP extortion attempt. Amarmani Tripathi, who was a BSP leader and later switched to SP to win a legislative seat, is also serving a life-term for murdering poet Madhumita over a soured relationship.
The dogged prosecution of BSP leaders by a government run by the same party demonstrates CM Mayawati’s resolve to go after criminals irrespective of their political hue. One of her election promises was to restore rule of law in Uttar Pradesh.
The special SC/ST court held all the three accused Milkipur MLA Anand Sen, his driver Vijay Sen and accomplice Seema Azad guilty of murder and atrocities against a Dalit. Justice Matambar Singh also fined Anand and Vijay Rs 20,000 each and Seema Rs 15,000.
Shashi went missing from her Faizabad college in October 2007. Her father Yogender Prasad alleged the then minister of food processing, Anand Sen, had kidnapped his daughter. It was alleged that the minister was having an affair with the girl and she was pressuring him to marry her. Prasad filed an FIR against Anand, his driver Vijay and Anand’s lady friend Seema Azad, accusing the three of kidnapping his daughter.
