India says stand on ISI-LeT direct link vindicated - The pioneer – 10.5.11

Pioneer News Service | New Delhi

Following the US Government’s chargesheet indicting four LeT operators and an ISI officer (a serving Major) in the Chicago court in connection with the 26/11 terror attacks, India on Monday said that its stand on the ISI-LeT direct link in the Mumbai attacks was vindicated. Especially, since India had already sought voice samples of these five persons and handed over dossiers to Pakistan on these terror handlers during the Home Minister-level talks last year.

A Union Home Ministry communiqué released on Monday confirmed the chargesheet of the four LeT top commanders and an ISI officer by US federal prosecutors in the Chicago court last week. A trial is going on in the Chicago court in connection with the killings of US citizens during 26/11. The fugitive David Headley has already turned approver in the case, exposing the ISI’s role in masterminding terror in India.

The second chargesheet indicted ISI’s Major Iqbal for handling Headley and providing US $25,000 for surveillance operation in India. The LeT commanders chargesheeted by US prosecutors are Sajid Majeed, Abu Qahafa, Mazhar Iqbal and a person named as Lashkar Member D, who is believed to be a close associate of the LeT chief Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi. All these four persons are directly involved in recruiting and training of the terrorists who unleashed terror in Mumbai on 26/11.

Indian security agencies had in early 2009 zeroed on these five persons after tracking the phone conversations between them and the terrorists during the three day long terror strike in Mumbai. They were giving specific instructions to the terrorists over mobile phones from Pakistan during the attacks in Taj Hotel and Trident. The LeT leaders were giving directions and instructions to the terrorists inside these hotels by watching the live transmission of Indian TV channels, said sources.

Indian investigators had named Major Iqbal along with another Pakistani Army officer Major Sameer Ali as the brain behind the Mumbai terror strikes and on the request of New Delhi, Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against them.
