Student steals mum’s jewels to go partying – ToI – 8.5.11

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Hyderabad: A 21-year-old B Tech student stole gold ornaments weighing 18 tolas from her own house to go pub-hopping with her friends. But her luck ran out on Saturday with the police zeroing in on her.
Police on Saturday arrested P Mounika Reddy, a B Tech III year student of SSJ Engineering College, Vattinagulapally, Gandipet, for stealing gold ornaments worth Rs four lakhs from her house. On March 7, Mounika’s mother P Janaki of Maruthi Nagar in Langer Houz lodged a complaint at the police station about the missing jewellery. Police registered a case under section 380 (Theft) of the IPC and started investigations. Her husband P Niranjan Reddy had died two years ago.
During the course of investigation, police came to know that Mounika had told her mother several times about lavish lifestyles of her friends and demanded substantial pocket money. However, as their financial position was not healthy, the mother rejected her plea, Langer Houz inspector G Sridhar told STOI.
Vexed with her ‘miserable’ life and peer pressure, Mounika decided to steal the gold ornaments from her house. On March 7, while her mother was busy in the kitchen, she removed some gold ornaments from the almirah and went to her college as usual. Later in the day, Janaki discovered that ornaments were missing.
Though she suspected her daughter’s role in the theft, she stated in the complaint that some unknown offenders had made away with the ornaments.
When police took the girl into custody and interrogated her on Saturday, she spilled the beans. She told how she had stolen the ornaments and kept at her boyfriend Praveen’s residence at Rasoolpura in Begumpet. “On her birthday (April 21), she sold three tolas at a jewellery shop in Begum Bazar and hosted a party for her friends,” SI K Gopal said. Police recovered 15 tolas of gold ornaments from Praveen’s house.
Later in the day, she was remanded in judicial custody and shifted to the Chanchalguda Women’s Prison. What her mother says and whether she will withdraw the case is not known. But under the law she can do so saying that the complaint was filed under a wrong belief.
Mounika befriended Praveen, who failed Inter, while chatting on the Net.
