The People for Animals chairperson and Lok Sabha MP, Maneka Gandhi, has also written to the CM stating that in the larger interest of the country, she will have to join the members of the religious fraternity on a dharna outside Vidhan Sabha here, if steps are not taken to effectively implement this Act in Uttarakhand.
Addressing the media after meeting the CM, delegation member Mahamandaleshwar Bhakt Hari of Bharat Gau Sewa Samaj, said that BC Khanduri is an able Chief Minister under whose previous tenure the Uttarakhand Protection of Cow Progeny Act was passed. However, without implementation, this Act has failed to achieve its aim of preventing illegal cow slaughter.
Swami Vishuddhanand from Tehri said that according to the 17th National Livestock Census, there are 70,000 stray cattle in Uttarakhand subsisting mainly on garbage and polythene. At least 100 stray cattle die in accidents per day due to lack of treatment, while about 15,000 cattle are smuggled for illegal slaughter every month from Uttarakhand to Rampur, Muradabad and Saharanpur.
