He was addressing a gathering of top Indian neuroscientists and abroad at the inauguration ceremony of International Symposium on Recent Trends in Neurosciences and XXIX Annual Conference of Indian Academy of Neuroscience where he was the chief guest. He called upon Indian neuroscientists to take up the leadership role and work on the frontiers of neurosciences like cognitive neurosciences and molecular neurology and highlighted contribu tions of Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS) which has done extensive research in the areas of neurophysiology and human physiology. The researches carried out by the laboratory, scientists have provided a greater understanding of the man-environment interface as well as the manmachine interface and helped in the development of effective weapon systems and support systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
He pointed out that most neurological disorders prevalent today along with clinical practices to handle them have been described in ancient Indian literature like Vedas, Upanishads and Charak Samhita. The need of the hour is to employ tools of modern science and put this traditional knowledge on a scientific pedestal.
He said the number of people afflicted with cerebro-vascular and neurological disorders is quite large in our country.
